In the 19th century, Appelterre became known as “the tobacco village”, at a time when there were no harmful effects of smoking. After the Second World War the cigarette replaced tobacco and now there is hardly a trace of the tobacco industry.
A statue (by Willy Ronsmans) reminds us of that past.
The village song also praises that village history, as evidenced by this stanza:
"We will win nice tobacco
fine leaves and such a beautiful color.
She brings prosperity to families
where it smokes,… of tobacco smell"
