The history of the square is still alive in its name today.

In the evening hours of February 3, 1865, the historic Aalen tithe barn on the site of today's square went up in flames, becoming the biggest fire disaster in the old town since the city fire of 1634.
In the same year, 1865, the city fathers decided to build the new fire station on the square. The fire department then had its headquarters there until the building was demolished in 1981.

The square is notable for its shady plane trees.
