The windbreak hedges typical of the Monschau villages served their purpose, especially in earlier times, during autumn and winter storms and protected the farmhouses behind them. Especially in the village of Höfen, the Heckendorf, you can admire many imposing and well-kept beech hedges, which are a special feature of the Monschau region. The hedges are made of copper beech and not hornbeam, as is often wrongly claimed. The location of a protective hedge on the main street, recorded according to the map overview, is also the most beautiful wind protection hedge in Höfen.
