Since the Middle Ages, this Gothic religious building, together with the Schwanenburg Castle, has dominated the cityscape of Cleves, forming a counterbalance to this mighty secular building complex.

Built as a collegiate church on the site of a Romanesque church beginning in 1341, it was the burial place of the counts and dukes of Cleves until 1581. The tombs in the "Counts' and Dukes' Crypt" still bear witness to this today. The church's significant artistic design, the late Gothic altars and sculptures, as well as the neo-Gothic sacred works, are expressions of a great piety that shaped the lives of the people.

A tour of the church also paints a picture of its history.

The collegiate and provost church St. Mariä Himmelfahrt goes back to a church near the Kleve castle that was mentioned in 1170. The current building was built between 1341 and 1426. After the almost complete destruction in the Second World War, the reconstruction based on the historical model was completed in 1969.

Around 1341, Count Dietrich IX. Monterberg Abbey (near Kalkar) to Kleve and began to replace the old St. John's Church with a new one. The choir was consecrated in 1356, and construction was completed in 1426. When French revolutionary troops marched in in 1794, the church suffered severe damage and in 1803 it was assigned to the parish of Kleve
