The village was first mentioned in 1126 as Castellano. According to tradition, it was built on a Roman fortification, the existence of which is indicated by the old place name Castellano, which was used until the 18th century, and the compact structure of the once fortified town center. The municipality includes the hamlets of Magliasina and Torrazza.
