Only a few people receive a real monument during their lifetime. The surgeon Johann Friedrich August von Esmarch (* January 9, 1823 in Tönning; † February 23, 1908 in Kiel) is one of them, because in 1905 - shortly after his 80th birthday - his native town of Tönning honored him with a statue in a prominent place in the castle garden . In the decades of his professional activity, Friedrich von Esmarch had contributed a lot to the development of medicine: He is considered the founder of the civil medical service, introduced, among other things, bandages, triangular bandages and leg splints and invented the ice pack for cooling. He developed into one of the most important trauma surgeons of the 19th century. Adolf Brütt, one of the most well-known German sculptors at the time, was commissioned to create the statue.
