You can cross the historic Herentalse Vaart here via the Doppersbrug. The historic waterway is approximately 4 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep. The canal was dug around 1490 on behalf of Charles the Bold. it was originally 7 km long and ran from Wommelgem to the city center of Antwerp. the canal provided the supply of pure and fresh water for the breweries within the city walls and drinking water for horses. The intention was to extend the waterway to Herentals. That never worked out, but that's how she got her name.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Herentalse Vaart lost its function and was largely filled in. The stretch of canal in the Rivierenhof is a last remnant. Together with the Doppersbrug it is protected as a landscape. The width of the 19th century Doppersbrug corresponds to the regulations from 1490.
