The Soviet military cemetery was laid out in 1946/47 in the Bad Freienwalde palace park. The sculptor Karl Tombreul made the monument soldier. After the reburial of 1,800 fallen Soviet soldiers in the Bad Freienwalde castle park, a memorial was to be erected at the upper end of the burial ground. Tombreul was commissioned in 1949 to create a soldier with a submachine gun hung in front of his chest. Tombreul and his collaborators worked on this monument for two years. The ceremonial inauguration took place on November 7, 1951, the commemoration day of the "Great Socialist October Revolution". The bronze reliefs on the concrete steles on the west side of the complex were created in 1983 as part of a redesign and come from the sculptor Horst Engelhardt (1951-2014) from Eichwerder.
Another monument to commemorate the victory of the Red Army over Nazi Germany was erected in 1947 on the market square in Bad Freienwalde. Exactly in the axis of today's Königstrasse, an obelisk rose on a plinth, in front of which a Soviet soldier with a flag stood in stone. As early as 1963, the structure of the monument was so poor that it had to be completely demolished and rebuilt. A little later the plaster crumbled again. When the Soviet cemetery of honor in the castle park was renovated in 1983, it was demolished.
