The square, laid out in the years 1835-1840, was originally named Franzensplatz, after Emperor Franz I of Austria. This place was created after the fire of the Estates Theater, today's theater. In the middle of the square is a monument to Emperor Franz I. The square was renamed Freedom Square when the republic was proclaimed from the balcony of the theater in 1918.
