Climbing the 199 Steps in Whitby is a legendary thing to do. The challenge might get you puffing a little, but it is worth it as you are treated to incredible sweeping views over Whitby and the sea. Along the way, you can visit Grade I-listed St Mary's Church and, at the top, you reach the magnificent Whitby Abbey, the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.

Go really early in the morning and have the entire area to yourself. Summer Sunday before 7am, and the place is totally deserted.
