The origin of the imperial abbey is a monastery founded in the 9th century. At the request of Louis the Pious, a Benedictine monastery was built there in 814. Under the Ottonians, the abbot of the monastery was made an imperial prince and so the abbey received complete immunity, imperial directness, coinage and market rights.
In the early 18th century, the large-scale construction of the abbey buildings began under Prince Abbot Alfons von Suys. The middle wing of the complex was first built between 1721 and 1728. The five-wing, castle-like complex in the late Baroque style was completed with the construction of the outer south wing in the middle of the 19th century.
After the Second World War, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia became the owner of the facility. The war damage to the buildings was repaired by the 1970s, and since 1976 the central wing of the Imperial Abbey has been home to the “Art from North Rhine-Westphalia – Funded Purchases since 1945” facility. The entire building complex has been gradually renovated since the beginning of the 1990s.

The Imperial Abbey is a beautiful old building that has been extensively restored.
