In 1989, fate brought ambitious nature lovers together in Emden. This circle gave rise to the idea of converting the disused sewage treatment plant in the Borssum district of Emden into a “green learning space”. The name ÖKOWERK was born from the play on words ecology and sewage treatment plant. [oekowerk-emden.de]

The new green stands out. More and more Emden citizens are interested in the extraordinary project, which is now called Ökowerk. A support association is founded. The city of Emden supports the young institution financially and the state of Lower Saxony names it an environmental education center. Committed teachers develop sound pedagogical concepts.
