Xu Guangqi (1562-1633) was born in Shanghai and was a scientist, scholar, bureaucrat and military strategist. He was baptized in 1603 and is also known by the name Paul. He worked with Jesuit scholars, helped translate western texts into Chinese, is considered by the Catholic Church as a servant of God.
This statue was erected in1994. His tomb and a memorial hall is located in Guangqi Park, just a two minute walk from this location.
