Hiking

Seven million years ago the North Sea covered a large part of Flanders. The coastline then lay between Leuven and Hasselt. Sandbanks containing a lot of iron-containing material developed off the coast, which later oxidized into iron-sandstone. These “Diestian sands” are very hard and withstood erosion in later periods. The old sandbanks are now recognizable as witness hills; Venusberg, Willekensberg, Sint-Jansberg and Heesberg. Iron sandstone from the hills can be found in the churches of Beringen, Meldert and Halen.
