The Hermannsdenkmal on the Grotenburg in Detmold was erected between 1838 and 1875 by Ernst von Bandel. It commemorates the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9, in which the Germanic tribes under Arminius defeated the Romans under Varus. The colossal statue depicts the victorious Arminius, also known as Hermann of the Cherusci, with his sword raised. The monument, which is 53.46 meters high, is one of the sights of North Rhine-Westphalia and one of Germany's national monuments.
