Karl Freiherr von Dais was born in Karlsruhe, in the former Margraviate of Baden. He only moved to Mannheim in 1811 to the house of his father, the chief court judge Wilhelm Freiherr Drais von Sauerbronn. Here Karl Drais invented two four-wheeled driving machines in 1813/14 and later the two-wheeled running machine.

From 1805 to 1807, Drais was transferred to the Rastatt Forestry Office for practical training in the forestry career, after which he taught again as an assistant teacher at his uncle's forestry college in Schwetzingen and, after successfully completing his exams, was employed pro forma as a forestry inspector at the Schuttern Forestry Office in 1808.
