Aterpe 1936 Memorial Sculpture (Artxanda)

“From Euskadi in memory of the fighters for democracy and freedom” was established in January 2005 with the main objective of promoting the creation and placement of a commemorative sculpture in memory and recognition of all those who, under the command of the Government of Euzkadi, chaired by Lehendakari Agirre, defended the legitimate authorities and the freedoms and rights of Basque citizens in the war of '36 and the subsequent Franco dictatorship.On June 18, and coinciding with the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Artxanda, the fruit of the work of this association, which has been based on plurality and understanding, became a reality. The sculpture, the work of Portuguese native Juanjo Novella, was placed on the same Artxanda mountain in a tribute act full of emotion for the objective achieved after a year and a half of work by the association. Likewise, on June 30, a replica of said sculpture was placed in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The sculpture, which has smaller dimensions than the original, will be present for a few months during which the Artxanda monument can be seen reflected in the mirror of Bilbao through the Guggenhein.
