The town hall in Jena was first mentioned in 1365 and is one of the oldest town hall buildings in Germany.

In the little tower, every hour on the hour, the “Schnapphans” grabs a golden ball (supposedly supposed to represent a Thuringian dumpling) with his mouth wide open. It is said that if Snaphans gets hold of the ball one day, Jena will go under.

Jena's old town hall was first documented in 1365. The original construction date is unknown, but records show that the building took on its current form during a massive reconstruction in 1377.
At that time, the ground floor was used as a marketplace, while official business
was conducted in the town hall vestibule on the upper floor.
The Baroque tower with its distinctive clock was added in 1755. Miraculously, the building survived the massive bombing raids of World War II unscathed, making it one of the oldest surviving historic town hall buildings in Germany.
