The Grensmaas is the non-navigable part of the Meuse between Maastricht and Wessem. The river meanders for 47 kilometers through the Maasland and over this distance ships have to use the adjacent Juliana Canal, which opened in 1935. Since 1839, the border between the Netherlands and Belgium has been in the middle of the stream. The Maas is a rain river. So unpredictable. Sometimes the water is high, sometimes low.

Obbicht and Grevenbicht are two Maas villages that today belong to the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Near Obbicht lies the nature reserve Nattenhoven, a roaming area with large grazers, managed by Natuurmonumenten. A few years ago, this area was still a construction site of the Grensmaas Project: to give the river more space, the banks were lowered and new nature was created. Also near Grevenbicht are Elba, where you can already roam today, and Koeweide-Trierveld, which is still being completed by the Grensmaas Consortium. In the coming weeks, the Grensmaas Consortium will start constructing footpaths in and along the future area between Obbicht and Grevenbicht. In total, this involves a route of approximately three kilometers of footpaths. The equipment for constructing the paths must be delivered via the public road in the centers of Grevenbicht and Obbicht. This may cause some inconvenience. The work will start at the end of May and will take four to five weeks. [2017-2020]
