From the 15th to the 19th century, a lot of transport on the Maas was provided by barges. In certain places the fairway changed banks. The hunters and horses, who pulled the barges along a towpath, then also had to change banks, which was done by wading and swimming.A road cross was installed at such places. This could be provided with a sacrificial block. The skipper put a few coins in here. The local priest emptied the offering block and, in return, celebrated mass at regular intervals for the safety of the boatmen.Today only one Maas cross remains. It is located on the banks of the Maas at the Invasiestraat. It is a wrought iron cross that includes a cast iron statuette of saints. This cross was restored in 1995.

There is an information board at the Maaskruis and you can enjoy the view of the Maas from a large bench.
