When the Jewish communities in Hungary split into Orthodox and Neologism in the mid-19th century, there were communities that refused to join either denomination. These groups are known as the Status Quo Ante. This community had the impressive Status Quo Ante Synagogue built in 1899/1900. The renowned Austrian architect Jakob Gärtner was responsible for its construction.

New synagogue, built in 1927, with around 1200 seats. By June 1944 there were around 8,000 Jews in the city, all of whom were deported to Auschwitz. 5,937 were killed, according to the former chairman of the Jewish community, Alexandru Ausch, in 2008. At that time, this community had 210 members.
