The former Realgymnasium was built in 1861-1864 as the third major commission from the architect F.A. Stüler to the town hall and church on the site of the former Carmelite monastery of St. Anna.
The basic form of the two-story brick building goes back to Baedecker's designs, while decisive design elements in the historicizing Gothic style, both inside and out, were penned by Stüler.
Today's grammar school bears the name "Gottfried Arnold", who worked as a Pietist in Perleberg an St. Jacobi between 1707 and 1714 and left significant impulses in the school system.
