You definitely shouldn't miss the ride on the Merkurbergbahn up the 668-meter-high Merkur mountain right at the foot of Baden-Baden. Mercury is named after the ancient Roman god of trade and commerce. In earlier times the mountain was called "Großer Staufen", which was a reference to the shape of an upside-down drinking cup. The Merkur summit can be reached with the Merkurbergbahn, but also on foot. The mountain railway, which was built in 1913, is one of the longest funicular railways in Germany at 1200 meters. The Merkurbergbahn runs between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. upon request by pressing the departure button.

I like to walk up to the Merkur... but you can also shorten the route by taking the train
