    The Vils

The Vils rises in Kleinschönbrunn in the municipality of Freihung in the Amberg-Sulzbach district. For its first five kilometers, it initially flows north-northeast toward Freihung. At the southwest edge of the town, it abruptly turns west and crosses the densely wooded landscape with the Forstlohe to the south and the Grafenwöhr military training area to the north, crossing into the Vilseck district.

There, it turns south-southeast and then flows through the districts of Hahnbach and the municipality of Poppenricht. Then, in its middle course, it crosses the independent city of Amberg, the largest town on its banks. Continuing its steady course, it flows through the districts and main towns of the municipalities of Kümmersbruck and Ensdorf.

Entering the area of the Rieden market town, it continues flowing roughly south and then, in the following town of Schmidmühlen, receives the almost 35-kilometer-long Lauterach River from the right, by far its longest tributary. The remaining lower reaches initially border the Hohenfels military training area in the Neumarkt district of Upper Palatinate on the right, which briefly borders the town of Burglengenfeld in the Schwandorf district. After approximately 87 kilometers, it flows into the lower Naab near the market town of Kallmünz in the Regensburg district.
