In Piazza Gabriotti, in the center of the city, the cathedral of Città di Castello has stood since the 11th century. According to tradition, the Romanesque church was built on the remains of an earlier pagan temple and was dedicated three times in its long existence, first to San Lorenzo and then to the city's patron saints, Florido and Amanzio (St. Floridus and St. Amanzius). In its current form, the building is the result of several renovations. The floor plan is in the form of a Latin cross with a single nave and side chapels containing some notable works of art. There is a crypt beneath the cathedral, also called the Lower Cathedral, which is accessible via a side staircase. There is an old stone sarcophagus with the relics of the patron saint.
