The Church of St. Lawrence and the Capuchin Monastery
The impetus for building the Capuchin monastery in Rumburk came from the will of the owner of the Rumburg estate, Count Franz Eusebius von Pötting, from 1662. In the will, under threat of loss of property, he committed his heirs to a Capuchin monastery for 12 monks “as a thank you for them Prosperity.” He also thought about building a rich library and he ordered the altarpiece for the monastery church from Spain. His cousin, court chamberlain Johann Sebastian von Pötting, was appointed heir in 1679, and he immediately began building preparations. Two years later he sold the estate including the building commitment to Prince Anton Florian of Liechtenstein. Construction took place between 1683 and 1685 according to plans by the order's master builder Fr. Georgio Monacensi from Munich. The Church of St. Lawrence was inaugurated on April 9, 1690 by the Litoměřice bishop Jaroslav Ignaz von Sternberg. The creation of the Capuchin monastery and the church of St. Lawrence enriched the spiritual life in Rumburk and the wider surrounding area.
The Capuchins lived in Rumburk for almost 300 years - from the founding of the monastery until its dissolution in 1950. As part of the so-called Action K, in accordance with the plan of the then State Security (StB), all spiritual orders and congregations were forcibly liquidated in Czechoslovakia.
