In 1459, Franciscans founded a monastery on the site of today's St. Mary's Church. In 1832 the monastery church was designated as the parish church of the newly built parish of St. Marien. The church building was expanded or rebuilt between 1913 and 1915 and received a mighty tower. After its destruction in 1944, the new church building was consecrated in 1949.
