The coal-fired power plant opposite, one of the last of its kind, needs huge amounts of "feed". The coal required - usually from Australia or China - is shipped from Duisburg to the port of Herne, where it is transferred to a factory railway for a short distance and then piled up into high storage heaps. It is then transported to the power plant via automated conveyor belts. According to the phase-out plan, this power plant will be shut down in 2030 - until then you will still be able to see mountains of coal here as before.
