The Karrendorfer Wiesen - a highly interesting meadow and water landscape not only for ornithologists. Floods can come and drain here without causing any damage, thanks to the dikes that have been moved back. The grazing cows keep the meadows short and many animal and plant species find a valuable habitat here in the salt grassland.
"Originally, coastal floodplain moors covered over 41,000 hectares along the Bodden coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With the exception of a few remaining areas, these valuable natural areas were lost due to intensified use in the 19th and 20th centuries. As part of a comprehensive restoration project in the early 1990s, the coast was for the first time In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a coastal protection dike was dismantled and the natural coastal and flood dynamics were restored. A large part of the 360 hectares of the Karrendorfer Wiesen has been subject to regular flooding since then. The originally species-poor and monotonous seed grassland has developed into large areas of valuable salt grassland over the last decades. From From 2019 to 2022, the Succow Foundation is planning and implementing the connection of the channels cut by the roadway (piping) and the reactivation of silted channels in the southern part of the meadows. With this - and targeted mowing and more intensive grazing of the areas that are still covered with reeds - we would like to create the conditions for improve the re-establishment of salt grasslands. Existing barbed wire fences will also be converted to reduce the risk of injury to birds. To reduce disturbance from visitors to the area, we plan to build an observation hide from which birds can be observed without disturbing them."
The majority of the area is owned by the Succow Foundation. The “Insel Koos” nature conservation station regularly offers guided tours of the area.
