    St. Rochus Chapel (1891/95) - Bingen 🚴‍♂️

The St. Rochus Chapel is a pilgrimage church located southeast of Bingen am Rhein on the Rochusberg. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002.

Amsterdam 1663: The last major bubonic plague rages through the city. Bingen 1666: The pathogen was introduced via European shipping routes from Holland or via the trade fair city of Frankfurt. The population mourned 1,300 deaths. Under the impression of the great hardship, the Bingen bailiff, Baron Frey von Dheren, pledged on behalf of the city council to build a chapel in honor of St. Rochus, which was consecrated on the Rochusberg in 1677. From then on, the church rarely found peace: In 1689, French troops plundered the chapel, a new extension was built in 1698, and in 1795, the chapel was set ablaze during fighting between French revolutionary troops and German soldiers and remained in ruins. Remembering the great devotion to St. Roch in the past, the chapel was rebuilt. On August 16, 1814, St. Roch's Day was solemnly celebrated. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was among the guests. In 1889, lightning struck shortly before an extensive restoration could be completed. Once again, the fire destroyed everything except the masonry. On the foundations of the once Baroque building, the three-aisled late Gothic church with an external choir, as we know it today, was built between 1893 and 1895. The chapel was consecrated on the eve of the St. Roch Feast in 1895.
