The statue of the founder of Porgy and Bess stands in front of the old town hall and near his jazz café, to which he points and takes off his hat. Artist Hannes Verhoeven wants to show with the image that Koulen (1922-1985) was enterprising and hospitable.
Life story: Frank Koulen was born on July 2, 1922 in Nieuw Nickerie, Suriname. At the age of 18, he left for Curaçao in 1940 where he enlisted in the Royal Navy. In 1944, via New York, England and Normandy, he finally ended up in Terneuzen to participate in the liberation of Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen. He met his future wife there and settled in Terneuzen after his contract expired. In 1957 he opened a lunchroom, Porgy en Bess, now a theater, in the Noordstraat, 30 meters from where you are now standing. The lunchroom quickly became a very popular café where more and more music was played. He developed countless initiatives and freed the people of Terneuzen from the pre-war narrow-minded morality that still prevailed at the time. Frank died in 1985 and the now famous jazz café was continued in the form of a Foundation that still manages the institute. It is now a cultural stage with a versatile program including jazz, blues, classical music, literature and many local bands that man the stage. Big names from jazz, blues, classical music and literature will perform there.
