Go back in time with a visit to Fort Ellewoutsdijk! The fort is part of a 19th century defense line that was intended to prevent enemy ships from sailing to Antwerp. Discover this beautiful fortress and enjoy the view over the vast nature of the Western Scheldt!

Fort Ellewoutsdijk watches over the wide Western Scheldt. In the cool casemates you can breathe in the atmosphere of the past. On top of the fort, the bird viewing point offers fantastic views. As soon as you pass the gate with its heavy wooden doors, you step back in time. History comes to life in this nineteenth-century fort. An attack from the sea was a nightmare for the Zeelanders for centuries. After the separation from Belgium in 1830, a series of forts were built along the Western Scheldt. This Scheldt Line had to monitor shipping and provide fire support to fighting ships. Most forts disappeared under the demolition hammer. Fort Ellewoutsdijk, built between 1835 and 1839, was spared. During the Second World War, the Germans added bunkers.Natural monuments
The fort has been owned by Natuurmonumenten since 1981. Visitors can wander through the subterranean spaces. Here the echoes of drum rolls and soldiers' boots still resound. A panoramic viewer has been installed on the gun ring, where the guns used to be. The Western Scheldt is busy with traffic and you can also see many birds there. The barn swallow and the collared redstart breed around the fort.Source: zeeland.com/nl-nl/visit/97_nl/fort-ellewoutsdijk
