The former Calvary Monastery in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler was founded by the Franciscans in 1630. The foundation stone of the church, which still stands today, was laid on January 31, 1664. As a result of secularization, the Franciscans were forced to leave Calvary in 1803; the monastery became French state property.

The history of Calvary, however, goes back even further: As early as 1440, a pilgrim returning from Jerusalem recognized a similarity in the landscape between Ahrweiler and the Holy City. He identified the hill south of Ahrweiler with the biblical Calvary and thus initiated the consecration of the site. The first chapel was built in 1440, and the current church building was erected in 1664.

In 1838, the Ursuline convent from Monschau moved into the former monastery and founded a school with a boarding facility for girls. This led to the founding of numerous other monasteries, including those in Aachen, Trier, Saarbrücken, Krefeld, and Koblenz. The buildings were rebuilt in 1897.

In 2017, the monastery was closed due to a lack of new members and economic challenges. The monastery church was deconsecrated, but the nuns' choir with the crucifixion group and the reliquary of Blessed Sister Blandine were preserved. Some nuns continue to live in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Some sisters remained in a smaller apartment in the town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.
