Industry was established in Buxtehude because of the port. The railway, which began operating in 1881, and later the road connection, displaced shipping traffic in Buxtehude. Around 1980, part of the port was built over with the harbor bridge. Nevertheless, historical buildings have been preserved, such as the customs office built in 1870 at Moortorstraße 2, which is very beautiful to look at 👍🏼.

The waters of the Este once powered the Flethmühle (Fleth Mill) in the city center of Buxtehude. Below that point, the Fleth was tide-dependent and navigable for barges of up to 100 tons until 1972.
