The city park (formerly also Neuer Park) is a popular excursion destination in Nordhausen.

The area was formerly a sheep pasture, a gravel area and, until 1862, a flood plain for the Zorge. In dry times the swampland turned into wasteland. With the construction of the Van der Foehr Dam and the Hartmann Dam, the Zorge could be regulated. The design of the park began in 1907. Lawns, paths and ponds were created. The park once also had aviaries with pheasants, pigeons, budgies, guinea pigs and dwarf rabbits. A special attraction is the game reserve with fallow and red deer, mouflons, sheep and goats. There is also a duck pond and a gondola pond in the park. The customs house is on the edge of federal highway 4.

A memorial stone in honor of Nordhausen personalities such as Michael Meyenburg, Justus Jonas and Johann Spangenberg stands near the animal enclosure, as does one for the poet Friedrich Schiller. The entire area of the city park is surrounded by a chestnut avenue that was laid out in 1825.
