Founded in 1680, it was originally the church of the Franciscan monastery of San Pedro de Alcántara, which no longer exists.
Since 1869, it has been considered the second most important parish in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, after the parish of Matriz de la Concepción.
The Church of San Francisco is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the Canary Islands and one of the richest churches in sacred art in the archipelago.
