On April 1, 1910, the construction of the bridge began, which was created with two stream piers over three stream openings as a two-track semi-parabolic truss girder by the Duisburg bridge construction company Harkort. The bridge was completed by the end of March 1912.

On March 5, 1945, the bridge was blown up by retreating German troops. Since the damage was comparatively minor, the Haus Knipp Bridge was the first railway bridge over the Rhine to be rebuilt in its old form between August 1945 and March 1946.

For 15 years trains only ran on one track between Duisburg-Beeck and Duisburg-Baerl. After extensive renewal of the superstructure, the bridge has been open to double-track traffic again since the beginning of 2013.
