Also called Eichenforst, after Amberg became the capital of the Palatinate Nordgau through the Pavia House Treaty of 1329, it was the residence of the Electoral Prince from 1338 onwards, who resided here as governor for the Electoral Palatinate part of the Upper Palatinate. After the Electoral Palace was built in 1417, the Old Veste was used as the electoral stables.

Anyone who wants to marvel at a medieval toilet should turn to the right side of the building in front of the old fortress. There, you'll see a bay window that was once used as a toilet block. The height of the bay window provided enough space underneath for a kind of collecting basin. Every few months, the contents were transported out of the city at night from the street.
