First mentioned in a deed from 966 in which King Lotharius restores the possession of 10 farms and the church to the Ghent Saint Bavo's Abbey. From this it can be deduced that a church, dedicated to Saint Bavo, had already been built by the monks on their domain before the Norman invasion. In 1121, patronage of the church was confirmed to the abbot of Saint Bavo, after 1537 transferred to the Saint Bavo chapter and after 1559 to the Ghent bishop and chapter.
Oldest traces in the current building, namely the west facade of the nave and the base of the square tower in Tournai stone, suggest a Romanesque cruciform church dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Side aisles and choirs from the end of the 15th or 16th century according to archive documents, left side choir of Our Lady from 1504 and tower built higher in 1529 and provided with a wooden spire. According to a description from 1577, one of the most beautiful and richest churches in the region.

In the 12th to 15th centuries, St. Bavo's Church was the property of St. Bavo's Abbey in Ghent, which exercised patronage rights over it.
Originally, a smaller Romanesque church from the 10th or 11th century stood on this site. Remnants of this can still be seen today: the western central facade, in irregular Tournai bluestone, the eastern brickworked Romanesque round arches above the apse of the choir and the sturdy chair of the crossing tower.

Fact: the main portal has a heavy door in a bluestone Louis XVIth frame, placed in 1825 and originating from the then demolished castle of Etikhove.
