Like all the bridges over the Bilbao estuary, the current Arenal Bridge dates from after the Spanish Civil War. During the conflict, they were all destroyed in defense of the city. However, the current design is a reflection and copy of the previous design and together they encompass more than 175 years of history of the city of Bilbao. It is also one of the best known, most beloved and most used routes by the people of Bilbao on a daily basis.

The Arenal Bridge is a bridge over the Bilbao estuary, in Vizcaya.
From it you can see the Arriaga Theater, El Arenal, the Santander or La Concodia Station and on Bailén Street No. 1, the first skyscraper in Bilbao, intended for offices.
With the growth of Bilbao, the urban heart of the town was moving away from the primitive Siete Calles. And the people of Bilbao knew that the main way for the city to expand was through the Abando area. In fact, the transit between Bilbao residents and Abandon Tarras, through the passage of the estuary by boat, was increasingly fluid. Therefore, the union of both banks was imminent, which, until then, was only possible through the San Antón bridge or the San Francisco suspension bridge.

This bridge connects the old town with the "new town" on the other side of the river near the train station.
