It refers to the remains of the medieval city wall of Trier that was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, partly following the old Roman wall. The wall was partially destroyed in 1684/89 and rebuilt later, but most of it was demolished in the 19th century. You can still see some parts of the wall and the staircase in different locations in the city
