Waldschänke, a formerly well-known excursion restaurant in Eisenach, is now almost forgotten and a little off the beaten track in the Johannistal.
Quote:
"In 1860, a refreshment point for forest workers, the "White House", was built on the north side of the Johannistal. This property was acquired by the court confectioner Franz Schmitz, who lived on Karlstrasse, in 1906 and, after renovation and expansion, he built the "Gaststätte Waldschänke" there.
The house had already had five different tenants or owners by 1950. Entire caravans marched into Johannistal on Sundays, with women on their arms and children by their hands. Here we had the famous “cream puffs” with our afternoon coffee and at the end a hearty ham sandwich at dusk. But after the fall of communism, the flow of day trippers ebbed."
