Designed in 1889 by architect Puchot, it is an imposing two-storey building in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The current town hall was built in the late 19th century (circa 1889-1890) on the site of an older building from the early 18th century that was in danger of collapse. However, there was a town hall (then called "halle") at this location at least as early as the 13th century. The cellars of this building were also used as prisoner's rooms and drinking establishments in the 15th and 16th centuries.

In Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, the current building testifies to the prosperity of the city at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the development of porphyry quarries.
