In accordance with the Treaty of Vienna, wooden boundary markers were placed in 1818. Around 1870, the decaying posts were replaced by 60 stone ones, most of which are still present. They are numbered with Roman numerals: I to XXX along the western border with Belgium and XXXI to LX along the eastern border with Prussia. The current German border is a little further on.
