Here is one of the surviving eagle stones, i.e. a boundary stone of the so-called Aachen Empire, which was formed by the Free Imperial City of Aachen and its associated country districts from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century. The land ditches and the gnarled hornbeams as remnants of the fortifications are also part of this border, which still forms the border between Germany and Belgium today.
