Several Native American tribes consider the Little Colorado River to be a deeply spiritual place. The Hopi tribe believes that their ancestors rose from the underworld at the Sipapu, a landmark on the Little Colorado River. It is considered the tribe's original home. The Hopi also believe that their spirits live in the Grand Canyon, specifically in the clouds above. "The Grand Canyon and humanity are one," said Leigh Kuwanwisiwma, former director of the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office.
