A little further away from the main crowds, you can enjoy a stunning view over the Grand Canyon from Grandview Point. This location was home of the Grandview Hotel, Grand Canyon's first hotel. But when the railroad was built into Grand Canyon Village, most of the tourists did not want to go as far as Grandview Hotel, so it was torn down in 1929.

This is also a great start for a hike on the Grandview Trail, a former mining trail to haul copper ore out of the canyon. But beware: The Grandview Trail is very steep and unmaintained with no water sources until you reach the well hidden Page Spring several thousand feet down the canyon. If you are an experienced desert hiker, the tour to Horseshoe Mesa is well worth the effort, but I highly recommend a multi-day hike and not hike up and down as a day hike. I did it both and I enjoyed staying overnight a lot more. It also gives you more time to explore the area and the cool stuff around Horseshoe Mesa.

To camp at Horseshoe Mesa, you need to get a permit from the backcountry office at Grand Canyon Village or via PDF form: nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/backcountry-permit.htm

We only descended a few meters on the Grandview Trail and that in itself was unforgettable. How great is it then to descend to Horse shoe Mesa. Carola "Bandit" K is to be envied

Anyone who visits Grandview Point should also descend at least a few hundred meters into the canyon and take in the trail and the view.
