On May 15, 1612, the first Friars Minor came to Venlo, where they temporarily settled in the old Sint-Jacobsgasthuis. In 1614, construction of its own accommodation was started on the grounds of the Hertogshof or Prinsenhof. The construction was made possible by financial support from the city and a donation from Archduke Albert and Duchess Isabella, who also donated part of the garden that belonged to their home (the Loohof). In 1616 the monastery building was finished and in 1620 the church belonging to the monastery.

Since the beginning in 1965, Eucharist celebrations have been held in the vacant church in a contemporary language, with all kinds of new elements that should especially appeal to young people. The idea behind it is that young people no longer show interest in "their parents' church". Chaplain Leo Brueren, pastor of the deanal St. Martin's Church, is the initiator and inspiration of the Youth Church Venlo. The bishop, accredited by the Vatican, has allowed him to experimentally deviate from the worldwide prescribed traditional texts for liturgy, singing and the music repertoire.
