Since 1994, the art museum has been located in the listed building of the former main post office in the center of Mülheim. The impressive square in front of it was designed by the important sculptor Otto Herbert Hajek in 1977 with a city sign and fountain.

The highlights of the collection are works of art from the Expressionist era. The Karl and Maria Ziegler Collection Foundation, which was handed over to the museum in 1981, contributed in particular to this. Drawings and paintings by Max Beckmann, Max Ernst, Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel, Emil Nolde, Franz Marc and August Macke can be seen. The museum has the largest Heinrich Zille collection outside Berlin as well as selected graphic series by Ernst Barlach, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso, among others.

The artists Werner Gilles, Arthur Kaufmann, Hermann Lickfeld, Otto Pankok, Heinrich Siepmann and Werner Graeff, who are closely associated with Mülheim, are represented with numerous works.

In changing exhibitions, the museum presents artists and themes from the collection from the city and region as well as classical modernism and contemporary art. Regular painting courses, art consultations, guided tours, artist talks and an art library complement the program. In the foyer of the museum, the museum shop, run by the sponsoring group, offers a large selection of gift items. The art museum is sponsored and supported by the Mülheim Art Association and the sponsoring group.

Note: The Mülheim an der Ruhr Art Museum ceased operations in the Alte Post on September 17, 2018 due to renovation work. The reopening is planned for spring 2024.
