    Vigo Bridge, Chioggia

The Vigo Bridge is one of the most important symbols of Chioggia, also known as Little Venice. A major tourist attraction, the bridge tells the story of the lagoon city's centuries-old past.

Already existing in 1408, the old bridge was already present during the war against Genoa. At that time, it was the site of the fighting, so it is inferred that it existed at least by 1379. The majestic bridge was restored in 1424, but it wasn't until 1478 that it was rebuilt in stone.

The bridge's balcony is entirely covered with Istrian stone and features a marble balustrade. Rebuilt in stone in 1685, the bridge was designed by Giovanni Francesco Morosini. Its conversion was prompted by the excessively high maintenance costs associated with the wooden structure. Furthermore, the bridge was essential for the city and was considered a symbol of beauty and elegance. Therefore, the year 1685 was engraved in the center of the arch.

If you arrive in Chioggia by boat, this bridge is the most striking landmark of the city. At both ends of the bridge there are busts of small lions made of marble.

The Vigo Bridge, called the balcony of the city, due to its position overlooking the Vigo basin, represents the city's calling card for those arriving from the lagoon or the sea. The Vigo Bridge is a symbol for the people of Chioggia and, probably, one of the most photographed monuments, as well as a source of inspiration for cinematography which, on more than one occasion, has chosen it as a natural setting.

The history of this bridge is quite ancient. It is even said that some clashes occurred during the War of Chioggia on this bridge which, therefore, would already have existed between the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th. Originally its structure was obviously made of wood and was later built in masonry in 1684-85 by the podestà Morosini, as recalled by a plaque above the north arch indicating the names of the councilors and deputies in office when the work was built. The marble decorations, balustrades and lions are later and date back to 1762, made under the podestà Girolamo Arnaldi. Thanks to a lantern placed on the bridge in 1796 by the podestà Angelo Memmo, it was also a point of reference for sailors, who could thus locate the entrance to the port more easily, especially on dark or stormy days.

The arch is made of brickwork but the entire covering of the bridge is in Istrian stone. The balustrade made of columns and bas-reliefs that decorate both sides is also made of the same material. Among the four bas-reliefs, the southern one depicting the Annunciation and the one depicting the Patron Saints should be mentioned. The steps and the handrail are also naturally made of Istrian stone, while the floor is in trachyte masegni. The columns of the parapet are adorned with four lions with shields depicting: a winged dragon, the name of the podestà Arnaldi, a rampant lion, while the figure of the fourth is no longer recognizable.
